ArcelorMittal’s steel has been used in famous landmarks around the world, including the new 1WTC in New York City, the Grand National Theatre of China in Beijing, the new Reichstag in Berlin, Germany, and the world’s first-ever zero emission polar research station, Princess Elisabeth Antarctica. Sporting venues around the world have been built with ArcelorMittal steel, from Johannesburg’s Soccer City to the Cape Town Stadium, both used for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, to the Wembley Stadium in London

We produce a wide range of construction solutions including rebar, beams, bridge girders, flooring, steel fibres, roofing, cladding and walling, as well as our creative façades Arguin, Coques MD, Caiman, Ecaille and Gascogne. We also supply complete construction solutions, such as GlobalFloor® flooring, Styltech® residential Light Steel Frames and Angelina™ cellular beams.

Our steel construction projects team – part of ArcelorMittal Distribution Solutions – is skilled at finding the technological answers to our customers’ complex construction needs. For example, we supplied steel in special cut-to-length sizes for the construction of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, currently the world’s tallest building.

Other high-profile examples of our steel include Rio de Janeiro’s João Havelange Olympic Stadium; the Lehrter Bahnhof in Berlin, Europe’s largest rail station; and the cruise terminal at the Port of Bilbao, Spain.

We are also part of the international team contributing to the Mose (Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico) project to protect Venice from flooding at periods of high water. ArcelorMittal steel is being used to build the gates that will close the three inlets to the lagoon during times of high water, preventing the Adriatic Sea from entering the historic city.

High-strength steel for low-carbon construction

Steel is also playing an important role in building a sustainable future. ArcelorMittal’s high-strength steel grades (Histar®) for the construction industry combine reduced product thickness, very high-yield strength, superior toughness at low temperatures and outstanding weldability. These characteristics satisfy the needs of the construction industry for light and economical structures that meet both safety and sustainability criteria.

Histar® steels also reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Substituting Histar® for regular steel achieves a CO2 reduction of around 30% in steel columns and around 20% in steel beams. The 50,000 tonnes of Histar® we produce each year represent a saving of 14,000 tonnes of CO2, which is the same as the annual emissions of around 4,000 cars.

Looking to the future, ArcelorMittal’s research and development team is developing even stronger steel. Histar® Grade 70 aims to exceed the current 460 model in every aspect. This means more weight savings – and more CO2 savings – for steel structures.

The development will also include improvements to toughness, which will enable stronger resistance to low temperatures. This will make Histar® Grade 70 more suitable for use in structures that are exposed to extreme cold, allowing it to be used in harsh environments.

Histar® steels have been used in landmarks including the Shanghai World Financial Center, the Emirates Towers in Dubai and 1WTC.

Styltech® is our Light Steel Framed solution for residential housing and is used in low-rise apartment buildings. Made of cold rolled profiles of high strength galvanised steel, this product offers high seismic resistance and several architectural possibilities. Thermal insulation is achieved with external cladding, for example with our composite insulated Arval® panels, which by suppressing thermal bridges increases energy efficiency. Improved energy performance will be increasingly important for housing in the future, and steel can help meet this challenge.

A house constructed with Styltech® in St Gely du Fesc, Southern France, has been selected by the French Energy and Environment Saving Agency for its outstanding architectural and thermal potential; sensors have been installed in the house to carry out analysis of its thermal life.

Built for a family of four at a very competitive cost, the house has achieved the energy efficiency label BBC (Bâtiment Basse Consommation). Its dry construction process also reduced waste and noise pollution on site, and the steel used in the house is 100% recyclable.
